Frequently Asked Questions

Microdermabrasion

+ What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion uses natural mineral crystals that gently, evenly and effectively remove the upper epidermal dead skin cells. It rejuvenates the skin, and provides a healthy glow.

+ Who is a good candidate?

This treatment is good for all ages (12 years and up). Microdermabrasion is good for many different skin issues that range from clogged acne prone skin, dull lifeless skin, mature skin and for those who want to maintain healthy looking/feeling skin.

+ What are the expected results?

After one treatment the skin feels light, clean, very soft and smooth. The skin looks healthy with a nice glow. When treatments are done at recommended intervals the results attained are as follows:

  • Softens fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Helps keep skin smooth and soft.
  • Decreases the appearance of acne and acne scars.
  • Minimize enlarged, open pores, blackheads and whiteheads.
  • Helps dull, stressed skin – gives the skin a healthy glow.
  • Improves sun-damaged skin - both tone and texture.
  • Allows much better penetration of skin care products for increased benefits

+ Does it really matter what machine is used?

The machine used makes a big difference. We use the Silhouet Tone Derma Pod. The Derma Pod is by far, the gold standard in Microdermabrasion. There are two different types of microdermabrasion machines – the diamond tip and crystal. Crystal mircodermabrasion uses disposable mineral crystals that gently lift the dead surface cells off the skin. Diamond tip uses a stainless steel tip that is sanitized and reused. The tip drags along the skin scraping off the dead skin cells. The later has a higher risk - at times the diamond tip can cause a scrape or scratch if it is not properly maintained. The crystals allow better control of the treatment.

+ Is there any downtime involved?

There is no down time after microdermabrasion. The treatment finishes off with a cooling mask which helps calm and sooth the skin. After the treatment the skin looks rejuvenated, refreshed and glowing. Some clients may be slightly pink. This is a treatment people do during their lunch break without worry of returning to work. *Unless you are having extractions as an add on treatment - then your skin may be more red than a regular treatment. However, we do use the Dr. Schrammek Blemish Balm to help cover up any spots and treat the blemishes as well.

+ Is it painful?

Microdermabrasion is not painful at all. It is actually a very comfortable and relaxing treatment.

+ Are there any contrainications?

The only contraindications are active and cystic acne must be avoided. Also, rosacea that is flared up must be avoided as well. Microderrmabrasion may still be performed on areas that do not have these skin issues.

+ Are there any side effects?

There are no side effects with microdermabrasion.

+ How often should I have a Microdermabrasion treatment?

Our skin regenerates it’s self within 28 days, then our dead skin cells should naturally shed, but due to age, stress, hormones and pollution this process slows down. So it is very important to do treatments that provide deep exfoliation to assist with this process. For best results microdermabrasion is recommended once a month.

+ Are there any pre and post care instructions?

After a microdermabrasion treatment an SPF of 30 or greater must be applied to the skin every day for seven days post treatment.  Although we recommend daily use of SPF to help prevent further photo aging.
